Petite Princess Rapunzel: Designing the Tower Fairytale
·5 min read
Petite Princess Rapunzel presented a unique design challenge: a character whose most famous feature — impossibly long golden hair — is also one of the hardest things to render convincingly. Here's how we brought her tower story to life.
Solving the hair problem
Long hair breaks cheap renders: it clumps, tangles, or turns to plastic. Our pipeline treats hair as thousands of individually lit strands with proper weight, shine, and movement. In stills, it cascades like poured gold. In video, it swings and settles with believable physics. It took longer than any other single asset in the series — and it was worth it.
The tower as a character
Her tower is designed as a place that is both a sanctuary and a cage: warm, book-lined, sunlit interiors contrasted with the vast world visible through one tall window. That single window appears in almost every composition — a constant visual reminder of what she's dreaming about.
Lantern light and the outside world
Her signature scenes take place at dusk, when floating lights drift over the valley below. Rendering dozens of warm light sources against a cool twilight sky creates the sense of wonder the story demands — and it's become one of the most recognizable visuals in our entire library.
